Heritage Expeditions
Heritage Expeditions are New Zealand’s internationally recognised leader in expedition cruising and responsible travel, and most experienced Ross Sea operators. Founded in 1984 by the Russ family, they are still proudly family-owned and -operated from their head office in Christchurch (NZ). A family of botanists, biologists and adventurers, their authentic expedition cruises aboard the purpose-built 140-guest flagship Heritage Adventurer are honed by 40 years of unparalleled experience, allowing them to offer one-of-a-kind authentic expedition cruise opportunities. Each expedition is meticulously planned and led by an industry-leading team of botanists, ornithologists, naturalists, historians and experts in their field, ensuring guests maximise every opportunity to learn, discover and experience as much as possible, while minimising the impact of their visit.
Heritage Expeditions promotes conservation and awareness of the natural world through responsible travel. They believe in sharing wilderness areas to create ‘ambassadors’ who support conservation efforts. Their commitment includes funding and logistical support for research and conservation projects, and they passionately raise funds to aid BirdLife International’s efforts to prevent the extinction of critically endangered species.
Heritage Expeditions prioritises environmentally responsible practices and hold active memberships in several conservation and travel organisations, including the International Association of Antarctic Tour Operators (IAATO) and the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO).

Thanks to the support of our donors, our Inspiring Explorers Expeditions™ encourage young people to engage with the spirit of exploration and develop the confidence to head into the unknown – to grow an Explorer Mindset. By facing challenges in some of the world’s most wild and extreme environments, these young explorers will gain new insights about themselves, their capabilities, and their place in the world.
AIMHI network
The Trust is proud to partner with the AIMHI network of eight schools in South Auckland, New Zealand. Their students participate in a number of our programmes. We are delighted that two students from the AIMHI network will be joining the expedition as Inspiring Explorers™.
Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate School
We are proud to continue our five-year partnership with Sir Edmund Hillary Collegiate School (SEHC). Students from SEHC join us for our Inspiring Explorers™ programmes, including travelling to the Antarctica Peninsula with the Trust in 2019 and 2020, and South Georgia in 2023.
