Outreach

The Trust’s outreach programme creates unique opportunities for participants to share their experiences with a global audience, becoming ambassadors and the next kaitiaki (care takers) for Antarctica’s cultural heritage.

If you travel to Antarctica with us on this once-in-a-lifetime expedition, you will return with so many stories to tell!

As part of your commitment to the programme, you will complete the following outreach activities with support from Antarctic Heritage Trust:

  1. Individual outreach activities
  2. One group outreach project, delivered alongside your fellow Inspiring Explorers™.

These outreach activities are an important part of the expedition, ensuring the experience is shared with others and inspiring the next generation of explorers.

Individual Outreach Requirements

As a condition of participating in the expedition, Inspiring Explorers™ are required to complete the following individual outreach activities on their return:

  1. Deliver three outreach presentations within your community. This could be at your school or tertiary institution, a community group or organisation you are connected with, or another suitable audience.
  2. Write a blog about your expedition experience for publication on the Trust’s website.

Don’t let this feel overwhelming. You’ll be fully supported throughout the process. During the team building and post-expedition weekends, you’ll receive coaching and opportunities to build your confidence in public speaking. We’ll help connect you with organisations that would value hearing your story, including many of the Trust’s supporters who made the expedition possible. We’ll also provide resources to help you share the Trust’s work and support you in writing your blog.

Group Outreach Project: Historic Hut Visitor Guide

Antarctic Heritage Trust will lead the production of an official historic hut visitor guide video, with support from the Inspiring Explorers™ team to capture key content.

This resource will be shown to future visitors to the historic huts in the Ross Sea region, cared for by the Trust.

The guide will share the significance of the huts and the Trust’s work to protect them, while helping visitors make the most of their experience and minimise their impact on the historic sites. It will also encourage visitors to become ambassadors for Antarctica’s cultural heritage beyond their visit.

To support Antarctic Heritage Trust, Inspiring Explorers™ will capture content for the historic hut visitor guide including filming and featuring in the video to help tell the story.

This is an exciting opportunity for those interested in film, videography, storytelling and communications to gain hands on experience contributing to a resource that will be seen by people from all over the world.

To help lead content capture for this project, we are looking for an Inspiring Explorer™ with the skills to capture high quality video footage and audio recordings while working in a remote and challenging environment.

If this sounds like an opportunity you’d love to be part of, and you’re excited to contribute to the protection and sharing of Antarctica’s cultural heritage, we’d love to hear from you.

Past Outreach Projects

Inspiring Explorers™ who have taken part in our previous expeditions have produced a huge variety of outreach, ranging from orchestral performances, educational resources, photographic exhibitions, short films, presentations, VR and AR content, and much more.

All outreach projects are agreed upon by the Trust with financial support from our donors and sponsors. The Trust supports a wide variety of outreach programmes – the examples below are of some of the larger outreach projects from previous expeditions.

Group Project – Inspiring Explorers Expedition™ Antarctic Peninsula 2026

Our most recent Inspiring Explorers, who travelled to the Antarctic Peninsula on an historic tall ship, the BARK EUROPA, are currently working on a three-part video journal series comparing their expedition to those who ventured South to explore before them. It will cover the themes of ocean navigation and exploration equipment, the traditions of crossing oceans to explore, and Antarctic wildlife and environment.

Into Ocean & Ice Exhibition – Inspiring Explorers Expedition™ South Georgia 2023

Into Ocean & Ice was a compelling exhibition at the New Zealand Maritime Museum Hui Te Ananui a Tangaroa, showcasing the creative work of four emerging artists from the Trust’s 2023 Inspiring Explorers Expedition™ to South Georgia. Tegan Allpress (Rongowhakaata), Peregrin Hyde (Ngāti Maniapoto), Rose Lasham, and Charlie Thomas have captured their transformative experiences through photography, painting, sculpture, and video, reflecting on the region’s dramatic landscape, wildlife, and cultural legacy. Their contemporary interpretations sit alongside historic works reimagining Shackleton’s Endurance journey and reproductions of Frank Hurley’s photographs. The exhibition opened with artist talks and workshops, including a children’s microphotography session, and ran until 31 August 2025.

Across the Atlantic Short Film – Inspiring Explorers Expedition™ South Georgia 2023

In 2023, 22 young New Zealanders were selected for the Trust’s ninth Inspiring Explorers Expedition™ which journeyed to South Georgia Island. The expedition honoured the centenary year of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s final expedition (Quest 1921-1922) to South Georgia Island, marking the end of the heroic era of Antarctic exploration.

Across the Atlantic, directed by Inspiring Explorer Te Aroha Devon, follows climber Sam West as he prepares for a guided attempt to climb Mount Worsley with a small team of Inspiring Explorers™, and data scientist Jenny Sahng, part of the science outreach team tasked with capturing weather and ocean data and observations using both historic-era methods and MetSevice’s world-leading technology.

Sadra Sultani – Inspiring Explorers Expedition™ Antarctic Peninsula 2020

Marco de Kretser – Inspiring Explorers Expedition™ Antarctic Peninsula 2019

The Frozen Wild

In March 2019, Marco de Kretser travelled to the Antarctic Peninsula as a member of Antarctic Heritage Trust’s fourth Inspiring Explorers Expedition™.

Marco recorded the sounds of Antarctica’s frozen wild—the ice cracking, the birds shrieking—in order to bring those sounds back to the studio and create music inspired by the brutal, desolate, gargantuan landscapes. Marco wanted to create an interplay between the smaller details and larger saws and strings to mimic the nature of the Antarctic environment.

Photo Exhibition and Soundscape

The sounds Marco recorded in Antarctica were also used to compose a soundscape, which accompanies a photographic exhibition in collaboration with Alexander Hillary, grandson of Sir Edmund Hillary, who was also a member of the expedition.

This selection of Alexander and Marco’s images, accompanied by excerpts from their diary entries recorded during the expedition, give us a glimpse into the impact experiencing Antarctica had on these two young men.
